Riverwalk Park - Cayce's newest Jewel
The City of Cayce celebrated the grand opening of the Cayce Riverwalk Park in October, 2002. The park is considered one of the key elements in the development ....Three Rivers Greenway project.
While other portions of the plan cover more active recreational activities such as canoeing and kayaking access points, and public space intended for acoustic performances and other venues, the Cayce Riverwalk Park is intended for more passive and educational activities. Large open areas are discouraged while side trails, designed to encourage exploring off the pathway, are in great abundance.
Located at the intersection of Axtell Drive and Naples Avenue, the park's 1.5 mile walkway is situated in a natural setting and provides beautiful views of the Congaree River....Columbia. In addition to meeting all ADA requirements, the park’s features include 24-hour security, daily maintenance, eight-foot wide concrete pathways, wooden bridges and overlooks, lighting, emergency call boxes, parking, and restroom facilities.
The Cayce Riverwalk Park has two new added features. A large events/family covered shelter has been built at the N Avenue entrance near the restrooms.
The Riverwalk Pavilion includes 6 large picnic tables with access to water and electricity. The Riverwalk Pavilion is perfect for weddings and receptions, large family gatherings and birthday parties.
The Congaree Shelter is located at the “T” intersection of the Park and has a fantastic view of the Congaree River. This covered picnic area includes two large picnic tables and is available for small events. Electricity and water is not available at this site.
The Riverwalk Pavilion and the Congaree Shelter can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge. To make a reservation, call Kirsten Davis at City Hall at 803-796-9020. When not reserved, these areas will be open to the public during normal park hours.
In October, 2006, the City of Cayce opened the first phase expansion of the Riverwalk.
This phase adds another mile to the existing parkway and makes way for our destination at the old government locks and then to the Riverland Park subdivision clubhouse. This phase of the project includes more concrete walkways, boardwalks, lighting, emergency call boxes, park furniture and signs--with a little bit of a different look. Taking a walk along this path puts you even closer to the Congaree River. This phase of the park will extend from the Pointe West apartment complex portion of the existing walkway, under the two railroad trestles (where a protective covered shelter resembling an old railroad waiting dock has been built), wind its way on the backside of the quarry, and cross a bridge over a deep creek bed to the government locks location. This new portion of the park opens a new river adventure for our citizens and provides views of mountain-like waterfalls and foliage.
“Thanks to the hard work of all the parties involved, Cayce’s Riverwalk Park is destined to become ‘The Jewel’ in the necklace of parks encircling Lexington County. This park is a shining example of regional cooperation and dedication to make a dream become a reality.” Avery B. Wilkerson, Jr., Mayor |
