DPS Community Programs and Outreach

With four uniformed officers, the Community Relations Unit works to educate citizens and business operators about crime prevention and fire safety resources through the coordination of community-oriented policing activities in Cayce. These officers organize Neighborhood Watch Group meetings as well as support the Cayce Senior Safety Club, Bicycle Patrol, the "Chat with the Chief" program and the Citizens Academy.

In addition, the Community Relations Unit also conducts security surveys of businesses and residents in an attempt to give citizens information on ways to make their home or business more secure. They provide home checks for residents who are out of town on business or vacation and sponsor Business Crime Fax, a direct link with the department to receive vital crime prevention information.

Other community and outreach programs include:

  • Alive at 25: This early prevention program targets young people between the ages of 16 and 24 to prevent traffic violations, collisions and fatalities. This four-and-a-half hour defensive driving course addresses the dangers of speeding, using a cell phone while driving, and abusing alcohol and drugs while behind the wheel of an automobile. Lexington School District One requires participation in the program of all its high school students in order to receive parking privileges at its schools.
  • Combat Auto Theft (C.A.T.): C.A.T. is a voluntary program designed to help in the fight against auto theft. By enrolling in the program the registered owner signs a waiver giving the police the right to stop his or her vehicle during the hours 1:00 AM and 5:00AM. A decal is placed in the rear window when the car is registered in the program. To register your car for C.A.T. call the Community Relations office of Cayce at (803) 739-0684
  • Cayce Senior Safety Breakfast Club: For citizens age 55 and older to socialize with others and learn more about safety and crime prevention.
  • S.T.A.R. Program: To further serve the needs of citizens who may require special attention because of a disability or advanced age, Cayce offers the S.T.A.R. program (System for Tracking At Risk People.) This allows residents to identify people or loved ones ahead of time who may be prone to wander away from family members or other care-givers to help recover those individuals and bring them back safely.
  • Operation Lifeline: This program is a special monitoring service that is offered to elderly citizens who reside alone or have special needs. In conjunction with Cayce Department of Public Safety, volunteers call participants daily to check on their safety and well being. If contact cannot be made with participants by telephone, an officer is immediately dispatched to the residence.

If you're interested in participating in any of these programs, please contact the Cayce Department of Public Safety at (803) 794-0456.
